The assumptions first
This example models ten days and nine nights on the ground in Japan for two adults sharing one room, following the curated Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka route. Every figure below is an illustrative planning input we chose — not a live fare, not a hotel offer, not a package price and not a quote. Japan's tourism organisation publishes its own example budgets and itself cautions that current prices may differ; treat any published number, including ours, the same way.
One worked example, in yen

|---|---|
| Accommodation9 nights at ¥18,000 per room, two adults sharing (¥9,000 per person per night) | ¥81,000 |
| Meals10 days at roughly ¥4,000 per day — casual restaurants, convenience-store breakfasts, one or two treats | ¥40,000 |
| Intercity travel allowanceShinkansen Tokyo–Kyoto plus local or regional rail Kyoto–Osaka; compare tickets and passes for your route | ¥20,000 |
| Local transportIC card top-ups for city trains, subways and buses | ¥10,000 |
| Airport connectionsArrival into Tokyo and departure from Kansai | ¥6,000 |
| AdmissionsTemples, museums, a viewpoint or two | ¥10,000 |
| ContingencyThe buffer that keeps a plan honest | ¥20,000 |
| Illustrative total | ¥187,000 per adult¥374,000 for two adults |
The total is ¥187,000 per adult — ¥374,000 for two adults sharing. It excludes international flights, travel insurance, shopping, premium experiences and any applicable service charges. Those are real costs; they're just individual enough that a single example number would mislead.
What moves the number
- Travelling solo: accommodation is the big one — a room alone costs nearly what a shared room costs per person doubled, so solo travellers should expect a higher per-person total.
- Families: rooms, meals and admissions scale with people, and larger rooms or adjoining rooms change the accommodation line significantly.
- Season: cherry blossom and autumn foliage periods raise accommodation prices and reduce availability; travelling just outside them is the classic saving.
- Airports: arriving in Tokyo and departing from Osaka avoids backtracking; a round trip into and out of one airport adds a return transfer.
- Rail passes: a pass is a tradeoff, not an automatic win — it depends on your exact route and how many long rides you take.
From illustration to real numbers
When you're ready, a Blip Away advisor checks real options, current pricing, availability and conditions for your dates and travellers, then sends a written quote with applicable charges, inclusions, exclusions and conditions stated clearly. You approve before anything is booked. That's the difference between this page and a commitment.
